The Braid
by a11y
Sign language video, captions, audio description and transcripts — made by the communities that need them, and attached to the things they belong to. A film, a plaque, a web page, a place.
Contributed once, reachable from anywhere. An app that knows what somebody is looking at can ask what exists for it, and play it back with the person who made it credited.
How it works
- Somebody records a companion — signing what a plaque says, describing what a scene shows — and says what it is for.
- A reviewer checks it, and it is published against that source.
- Any app can then find it — from a scanned code, a photographed sign, a video already playing, or where somebody is standing.

- Who We AreText · Who We Are Reaching the Deaf for Christ by providing education, vocational training, & employment opportunities, and access to the Gospel to break cycles of isolation and poverty. Why IDEA Only a small percent of Deaf children have access to signed education in the Philippines, as most are either unaware that education is possible for them or unable to afford it. 80% of Deaf Filipinos are unemployed due to widespread discrimination barriers to vocational readiness. IDEA exists to create brighter futures. We believe each person is created by God, for a meaningful connection with Him and others, and with a unique purpose and plan for their life. IDEA envisions a society in which the Deaf in the Philippines enjoy social and economic equality, exchanging isolation for community, servitude for self-reliance. Our mission is to foster self-reliance by providing academic, vocational, physical, spiritual, and economic opportunities for deaf children, adults, and families. How IDEA is Funded Sponsorship gives a Deaf child access to education and a brighter future. General donations and grants from individuals, foundations, and churches sustain and expand programs. Proceeds from IDEA-run businesses go back to expand our work.Sign language

Two things that are not negotiable
Contributors keep ownership and can withdraw a recording at any time. Withdrawal is immediate, and every app carrying a copy is obliged to delete it.
Nobody watching is identified. The interface apps use knows which app is asking and nothing about the person holding the phone. It is not built to know.
